On February 14, 2018, once again America was at the center of another tragedy. As per wikipedia, the United States has MORE mass shootings than any other country.
When I read this — I wonder and ask myself, “why does America need guns?”
For what purpose?
To protect itself?
The last I heard, you needed a gun when you were in a war to protect yourself. Since when did it become normal to have guns while living in a society? And given that the second amendment of the United States Constitution reads “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” people sincerely believe they should have guns.
Now I come from a country which has a massive population crisis and equally has many more problems than USA. However, the one thing that is not normal in India is for anyone to carry a gun or have a gun. As far as I have seen and as far as I have known — Indian civilians do not have or keep guns. And then if I take my life in Dubai, UAE where I spent 40 years of my life — I have never heard or seen anyone have a gun — let alone sporting one. Neither have I read about anyone in the Middle East (Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi, Oman, UAE) having a gun or children shooting children in school or in universities.
Now don’t get me wrong. I am not trying to imply that because India, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Saudi and Oman do not have guns they are better countries than USA.
I’m pretty sure the achievements & accomplishments of USA are much more greater and far more superior than almost all the countries put together. That is not the point here. This isn’t a discussion about stroking ones pride or achievements. Rather it is about people — men, women and children being able to have access to a dangerous weapon that technically speaking — should be used in wars. Not in housing communities, universities and schools.
I mean seriously, in today’s day and age WHY does someone need a gun?
The debate can be made that if we get rid of guns, the bad guys will illegally bring in guns or that a person can even kill you with a knife. So then where does this paranoia end?
When I had shared my opinions online, I wasn’t surprised to see two schools of thought. One side that supported the need to have guns. The other side that didn’t feel the need to have it.
So now where is the solution to this problem? In fact, what happens tomorrow if a it starts becoming legal to bear nuclear weapons? Isn’t that what countries are doing — You keep Nuclear Weapons so I will also keep them. If you shoot one, I will also shoot one. So if I die, you also die.
There is that saying which goes like this “An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth will make this world a dark and toothless planet.”
Right now I am staying in Thailand. Here in Thailand there is a law governing carrying fire arms but until now, I haven’t seen anyone carry a gun. With regards to incidents where guns are concerned — I haven’t read about any incident either.
My cousin is in Canada and another one is in Australia. I doubt there have been any incidents in either of those countries where Guns in schools or universities or otherwise are concerned. Even when I check online to see Mass Shootings — once again it is only USA that has the highest record of mass shootings.
I think its high time Americans not only asked that question but found a solution to it. And yeah, justifying having a gun or stating its a right is not going to help anyone.
If in doubt, ask those families whose children died on February 14, 2018.
You will know the answer.
