Loy Machedo On Overcoming Depression

Talk about the perfect storm

Homeless.
Penniless.
And now depressed?

So how did I overcome this corrosive state that could permanently damage my mental & emotional health?

Here is the Full Video if you wish to watch it.

Here are the things I did.

  1. EXERCISE
Exercise daily — even if it was a little.
  2. BREATHE DEEPLY
Breathe deeply 5 to 10 breaths whenever possible. And by deeply, I mean REALLY deep
  3. MEDITATE
Meditate for a few mins before I would do any work. Nothing sophisticated or nor did I try any “OM” chant. Just silence, still & soft surrender.
  4. SHORT NAPS
Take plenty of short naps whenever my mind felt cloudy
  5. WRITING ON A SHEET OF PAPER
Whenever a thought popped up — I would note it down. So good, bad or ugly — I would write it on a piece of paper (typing on a laptop may not have the same effect)
  6. SEX
You will be like huh??? Well, sex is therapeutic & relaxing. Let’s not act dumb. I’ll leave the details of the WWWHW out of this article.
  7. HEALTHY FOODS
Remember to eat healthy food. Avoid comfort food. Short-term may help. Long term, it will cause havoc.
  8. MIND & BODY GAMES
Entertain your mind with something fun. It can be a PC game, reading a book, playing a game, going for a dance or simply going for a long walk. (I did the last one)
  9. STAY BUSY
There is nothing worse than sitting down in a room all alone having nothing to do and feeling sorry for yourself. Avoid doing that.
  10. EMOTIONS
Use them to empower you and not bring you down. Most people use these emotions to make them feel more miserable. Don’t do that. I’m not saying ‘fake it’. Rather learn to channelize it.
  11. COLD & CALCULATIVE
There is no room for Mr Nice Guy in a world that defines itself as a ‘Dog-Eat-Dog’ environment. You can choose to believe that good trumps evil and the nice guy always wins in the end. If that were the case, most bad people wouldn’t get away with whatever it is they have done. And worse — even if the bad guys do get caught — the good guys are the ones who pay the price for these actions. So I’m not saying do bad or be evil. Rather keep it ‘business’ like.
  12. SOLUTIONS MINDED APPROACH
Avoid telling me what the problem is. You know the problem? Good. So now what’s the solution? And if you do not know the answer — what is the action you are undertaking to implement a solution right now?
  13. 3 POINTS OF GRATITUDE
My friend Rads gave me this incredible point — Every morning she would get up and write 3 things she was absolutely grateful for. It could be the food she had, the health she was blessed with or simply the cup of coffee should could make at home. It helped her realize there were plenty of things many didn’t have — but which she did.
  14. NO ONE CARES
No one cares if you have a problem or not. So don’t make it too obvious to the world. Trust me — no one cares. And most keep away from sad people, sad stories and sad incidents.
  15. IMPRESS & EXPRESS
And here’s a bonus point — Dress to Impress & Communicate to Express. It helps.
