I happen to bump into the ‘BHAG’ concept 6 years ago when I read the book titled Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies by James Collins & Jerry Porras.

According to the authors, BHAG is a visionary goal or a business-changing benchmark the organization gives itself so as to become a game-changer. It is one of those goals which is not impossible but highly improbable.

For people like you and me, BHAG is a daring or courageous vision or larger-than-life goal .

So what is BHAG?

BHAG = Big Hairy Audacious Goal.

Now, even though I would love to give myself a goal of achieving $100,000,000, I prefer being very practical and realistic. Given that neither you nor me know if we would live past next day — forget next week, I think it is pointless for a person to have a BHAG for a lifetime.

That is why I keep Annual BHAG’s or say a Monthly BHAG(or bi-monthly or say a BHAG for 3 months) so as to test and push myself to see how far I can go.

So what is my current BHAG?
Let me share it with you.

In 3 months or approx 100 days, I want to complete/achieve:

  • 100 articles on Medium
  • 100 videos on youtube
  • 20 super high quality articles on my website
  • 3 clients
  • 3 Books
  • Lose 6kgs (without exercise)

And all this while enjoying my life, playing games, working 4 days a month.

Now, the beauty of this kind of goal-setting strategy is that, I know what I am supposed to do within the specified period. I know how long I have before I complete it. And I can choose to either push for 10 medium articles a day or 2 medium articles + 6 videos or have a combination of 2 medium articles, 1 website blog post + 4 videos — whatever the combination I feel like. However, I know what I have to achieve.

Now what is the benefit of this goal strategy?

  1. I know SPECIFICALLY what I am supposed to achieve
  2. I know WHY I am supposed to achieve what I am supposed to achieve (the benefit if I achieve it and the pain if I do not)
  3. I enjoy doing this
  4. I know this is a slight push from my comfort-zone
  5. This is in my line with my life’s purpose & vision (which is my online brand LoyMachedo.Com)

Remember — it need not and should not be something impossible or like a Billion Dollar Venture.

It would be great to be the next Mark Zuckerberg or Elon Musk. But let’s be realistic here brother……. let’s take it s-l-o-w and one step at a time……

So what is your BHAG?
What is that one goal that you can give yourself which will push yourself to get out of your comfort-zone and not only help you get better but also help you benefit tons more if and when you achieve it? And what is that goal which you absolutely enjoy doing and it comes to you effortlessly?

That my friend should be and must be your BHAG.

So once again — WHAT IS YOUR BHAG?
Let me know in the comments section below and I would love to read it!
